A Guide to Training Remote Employees

Remote work has become such a huge topic nowadays, mainly because it’s been thrust into the spotlight amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations are forced to adopt the remote work model, with many of them sticking to it even when restrictions are eased. The same goes with remote employee training, which is a crucial aspect to consider for employees working from home.

Thanks to digital platforms, topics like cybersecurity learning have become even easier to learn online. But of course, there are challenges employees face, which is why you must ensure they are comfortable and learn effectively from the training given.   1. Choose a Delivery Model

Before you even begin implementing training for remote employees, you must first prepare. For starters, you must select a delivery model:

  • Synchronous learning – When learners participate simultaneously, which happens either online or offline
  • Asynchronous learning – When learners access learning content, and assessments, and participate in activities in their own time.
  • Blended learning – This is a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning

Afterward, you must invest in the necessary tools, such as a conferencing and webinar platform, learning management system, and eLearning authoring tool. You must then prepare the appropriate learning materials, which you can create on your own or get from third-party platforms (they can also provide compliance training modules on certain topics).

 

  1. Have an Effective Training Schedule

When employees have a consistent and transparent training schedule, they will prioritize it, so you get a higher attendance rate. A well-thought-out training schedule ensures anyone needing the training will have access to it at the most appropriate time and date.

  1. Provide Easy Access

Communication is critical and no one should be afraid of over-communicating. This isn’t an office environment so ensure that your training session is easily accessible and clearly communicated.

Send an email before the virtual session link, as well as an image of a screenshot of the virtual room. You may also want to share what to expect and instructions on how to use the video conferencing platform.

Also, send a message the day before the class and a few minutes before the class begins for last-minute instructions or to resend the URL link to the video call.

Even after the call, you must stay online, offering regular check-ins and meetings for employees. This allows learners to ask questions, address any issues, review the lessons, and the like.

 

  1. Keep Learners Engaged

This will be remote training, so you need to find more ways to keep employees engaged. For instance, you can reward training efforts like built-in certifications or rewards like gift certificates or gift baskets.

You may also want to consider utilizing gamification features your LMS offers, like leaderboards, which keep learner engagement high.
